BMW is partner of Art Basel in Miami Beach 2015. Presentation of BMW Art Journey and the BMW Art Car by César Manrique.

Miami. From December 3 to 6, Miami Beach will once again take centre stage in the international art world. For the 14th time running, the famous art fair will take place in Florida, supported once again by its official partner BMW. 267 of the world’s leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa will present modern and contemporary art as well as works by emerging artists. As in previous years, BMW will provide the official VIP shuttle services, this time with the limousines of its new BMW 7 series. In addition, BMW will host an exclusive reception for VIPs as part of the art initiative “BMW Art Journey” on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.

BMW and Art Basel will present the BMW Art Journey, one of their most recent projects, in the botanical garden adjacent to the fair grounds. Like a mobile artist’s studio, BMW Art Journey offers artists the opportunity to travel to a destination of their choice. The winner of the first edition, Hong Kong based artist Samson Young, travelled across five continents while exploring the subject of iconic bells in light of various themes including conflicts, religion, community and the political symbolism of sounds.

On the evening prior to the VIP opening of the fair, BMW i, together with Soho House, will invite selected guests to an Art Talk. Lawrence Weschler, author and long time staff writer at The New Yorker will speak with the winner of the BMW Art Journey, Samson Young, about his extraordinary journey. On the same evening, the first publication on the BMW Art Journey, published by Hatje Cantz, will be presented. Looking at 70 different iconic projects, “The Sense of Movement: When Artists Travel” conveys the fascination and importance as well as the artistic significance of artists’ journeys.

For further information, please visit http://www.hatjecantz.de/bmw-art-journey.

On December 3, following the first BMW Art Journey, a panel of expert jurors of curators and museum directors will compile the shortlist for the coming edition, to be announced as part of a press event at the Botanical Garden. Chosen from “Positions”, the sector of young galleries at Art Basel Miami Beach, the three shortlisted candidates will be invited to present their planned itineraries. After a second decision by the jury, one of them will be offered the opportunity to realise his trip as part of the BMW Art Journey. The jury at Miami Beach will include Juan Gaitán (Director Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art, Mexico City), Massimiliano Gioni (Artistic Director New Museum, New York City), Gabriele Horn (Director KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin), Victoria Noorthoorn (Director Museo de Arte Moderna, Buenos Aires) and Bisi Silva (Artistic Director Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos).

In addition to experiencing the BMW Art Journey, visitors can venture into the fair’s Collectors Lounge to catch a glimpse of the BMW Art Car designed by César Manrique in 1990. This Spanish artist worked as architect, graphic designer, sculptor and landscape artist. Most importantly, however, he was passionate about protecting the environment. Inspired by his commitment to this cause, he designed an Art Car representing the harmony of technology and nature.

This year, the BMW Art Car Collection is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and the two artists chosen to design the next two Art Cars were recently announced at the Guggen-heim Museum in New York City. Chinese artist Cao Fei (*1978) and American artist John Baldessari (*1931) will be the youngest and the oldest artist represented in the collection respectively. Both artists will create a BMW M6 GT3 in the coming year, which will be presented in museums and also on the racetrack in 2017.

The New BMW R nineT Scrambler

A Down-to-Earth Character Beyond Established Conventions

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 20, 2015… Scramblers – They were ridden by scores of movie heroes and amateur racers. With deep-tread tires, a raised exhaust, somewhat extended spring travel and a relaxed seating position, Scramblers offered riders during the 1950s to 1970s not just motorcycling fun on winding country roads, but also great off-road capability and an extended range of uses. Like the motorcycles themselves, the people who rode Scramblers were not bound by established conventions of time or place. They could be seen virtually everywhere: on winding country roads, stony mountain passes and, where permitted, even on sandy beaches.

The history of BMW Motorrad is also rooted in the Scrambler concept. In 1951, the BMW R 68 was presented at the International Bicycle and Motorcycle Fair IFMA in Frankfurt with a typical raised 2-in-1 exhaust, just like the one raced by BMW Motorrad legend Georg "Schorsch" Meier. While the standard version of the R 68 had a conventional exhaust installed in a lower position, the raised exhaust version was already available back then as a BMW Motorrad accessory. To this day, some owners of this highly valuable post-war BMW Motorrad classic still like to retrofit the special Scrambler-style exhaust.

Now, BMW Motorrad presents the new BMW R nineT Scrambler, a motorcycle which revives the Scrambler era in a very unique way. It has everything that defines this motorcycle type – a distinct spirit created for motorcycle enthusiasts who love things that are pure, essential and non-conformist – combined with the technology and quality of a BMW. Together, with the R nineT Roadster, the BMW Scrambler establishes the new BMW Motorrad Heritage world of experience.

Potent, air-cooled boxer for vigorous power.

The new BMW Motorrad Scrambler features a classic air-cooled, punchy flat-twin boxer engine, which has stood for hallmark design, powerful torque and a unique sound for more than nine decades. The R nineT Scrambler is fitted with the air/oil-cooled boxer with a capacity of 1,170 cc. It delivers an output of 110 hp (81 kW) at 7,750 rpm, develops a maximum torque of 86 lb/ft (116 Nm) at 6,000 rpm and, with the new engine mapping and a fuel system including carbon canister, meets the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class.

Dynamic Scrambler with versatile character.

With the new Scrambler as with the R nineT, BMW Motorrad has responded to the desire of many riders who want to be able to modify their bike according to their own personal taste. The spectrum of potential alterations ranges from original BMW Motorrad accessories to parts and accessories produced by customers to create a unique motorcycle.

Raised exhaust in Scrambler style with a robust sound.

The raised exhaust with two vertically arranged rear silencers meets the requirements of a classic Scrambler. It is fitted very close to the body of the bike, thereby reinforcing its generally slim appearance while producing a deep robust boxer sound. A large-size catalytic converter ensures even more effective exhaust gas cleaning.

Traditional suspension technology with 19-inch front wheel and a wide range of potential variations.

Similar to the R nineT Roadster, the frame concept is a key component of the Scrambler's extensive customization capabilities. The specially developed steel tubular space frame integrates the boxer engine as a load-bearing element and consists of a front section with integrated steering head and a rear section with swinging arm mount.

The passenger frame can be detached, giving the R nineT Scrambler a particularly unique appearance in combination with the single seat option. In line with the bike’s active riding character, the suspension geometry of the R nineT Scrambler is mainly geared towards sound handling and a neutral cornering response, providing ample riding fun on winding country roads.

In optimal Scrambler style, front wheel suspension is in the form of a telescopic fork with rubber gaiters and a spring travel of 4.9 inches. Rear wheel suspension is provided by a Paralever single-sided swing arm, similar to the other boxer models. Suspension and damping are provided via a central spring strut. The spring travel is 5.5 inches vs. 4.7” for the R nineT.

The new BMW Scrambler is fitted with light alloy cast wheels. In typical Scrambler style, it has a large 19-inch front wheel with tire sizes of 120/70-19 at the front and 170/60-17 at the rear.

In view of the impressive riding dynamics of the R nineT Scrambler, the brake system - which comes with ABS as standard - is fitted with 4-piston calipers, steel-wrapped brake lines and 320-millimeter brake discs at the front. At the rear, effective deceleration is ensured by a single-disc brake with a diameter of 265 millimeters and a 2-piston floating caliper.

Special ergonomics for a relaxed Scrambler feel.

A relaxed upright seating position is one of the key features of a Scrambler. For this reason, the ergonomic triangle of handlebar-seat-footrests has been redefined. With handlebars that are higher than the R nineT, slightly less seat padding and rider footrests that are positioned somewhat lower and further to the rear, the new model gives the rider a relaxed riding feel.

Purist design, attention to detail and a classic color concept.

Whether with the standard light alloy cast wheels or the optional cross-spoke wheels – the new R nineT Scrambler always demonstrates authentic style. One important design objective was to deliberately ensure a purist appearance. From all angles, the BMW Motorrad Scrambler is defined by a blend of classic and modern elements of motorcycle design style.

The circular headlamp gives it an expression of freedom, independence and serenity, while the speedometer with analog display features a simplistic style that very much reflects the classic principles applied to the development of the BMW Scrambler. Eye-catching elements are the painted 4.5 gallon sheet-steel fuel tank and the trim cover made of fine aluminum with an embossed R nineT inscription running across the air intake duct on the right-hand side.

The new member of the BMW Motorrad Heritage world of experience also conveys its high-quality workmanship in the details. These include refined aluminum forged parts that are glass-bead blasted and then given a clear anodized surface, the aluminum clamp for the tubular handlebars, which bear an engraved BMW Motorrad inscription, and the tapered two-person Saddle Brown seat with attractive stitching.

The new BMW R nineT Scrambler is available in Monolith metallic matt paint. The bike's classic, purist character is enhanced by black components such as the frame, swing arm, wheels, fork slider tubes and engine housing.

Technology.

BMW R nineT Scrambler powerfully individual character with authentic appeal.
Deep-tread tires, raised exhaust, wide handlebars, extended spring travel and a slightly modified design – this simple but effective formula was used decades ago by dedicated motorcycle enthusiasts and manufacturers to convert existing road machines into so-called Scramblers.

In addition to riding fun on the road, Scramblers also offered the rider good off-road suitability and, therefore, an extended range of use. Scrambler riders were to be seen virtually everywhere: on winding country roads, stony mountain passes and - where permitted - on sandy beaches. Up until the early 1970s, Scramblers were regarded as the ultimate all-round motorbikes before eventually being eclipsed by the new class of enduro bikes with their greater capacity for off-road riding.

Now BMW Motorrad presents the new R nineT Scrambler, a motorcycle which revives the Scrambler era in a very special way. It has everything that defines this motorcycle type, filled with a very distinct spirit and created for motorcycle fans who love things that are purist, reduced to the essentials and non-conformist.

The new BMW Scrambler also has the genes of more than nine decades of BMW Motorrad, applied here in the form of a unique concept, pure riding pleasure, a reduced, classic design and a deliberate focus on the technical essentials. With its classic style and purist expressiveness, it is intended for all those looking for an authentic motorcycle that offers robust character and thrilling riding dynamics.

And there is more to this new BMW boxer than just a BMW motorcycle that has not existed in this form before. As with the development of the R nineT itself, BMW Motorrad designers’ and developers’ focus in developing the Scrambler was centered on the emotional component of the man/machine connection in addition to pure technical functionality. They followed the principle that a motorcycle has to offer optimum technological efficiency as well as appeal to all the rider's senses and stimulate powerful emotions. In short: it has to arouse real enthusiasm - when opening the garage door in the morning, savoring a stop at the top of a mountain pass or enjoying a ride along a winding country road!

The new R nineT Scrambler draws on iconic elements of a bygone era, combining the current technological attributes of BMW motorcycles with classic design principles and a degree of individualization that remain unparalleled to date.

Feisty Scrambler character with a great capacity for customization.

Customizing is all about individualization - making alterations to motorcycles to suit personal preference and taste. The range of customization options runs from BMW Motorrad Original accessories to aftermarket offerings from famous custom designers.

With the new Scrambler as with the R nineT, BMW Motorrad has responded to the desire of many motorcyclists who wish to customize their bike themselves by making modifications that suit their personal tastes and riding preferences.

For this reason, the new Scrambler features a particularly sophisticated overall concept that enhances the capacity for individual modification. It also has a wide range of technical provisions that allow installation of items from the extensive range of BMW Motorrad special accessories, permitting further customization.

In this way, customers themselves can become actively involved in configuring their own personal BMW Scrambler. Based on the main existing components of the engine and suspension, the Scrambler offers riders a broad spectrum of possibilities to completely individualize it according to personal preference.

Powerful, air-cooled boxer engine for dynamic riding fun.

The longitudinally mounted 2-cylinder boxer engine with power transmission via a universal-shaft drive has been synonymous with BMW motorcycles for more than nine decades. Like no other motorcycle engine, the air-cooled BMW Motorrad flat twin power unit stands for unmistakeable, authentic design, powerful torque and a unique, throaty sound.

The BMW R nineT Scrambler features the familiar air/oil-cooled boxer engine with 101-millimeter bore, 73-millimeter stroke and capacity of 1,170 cc. Its peak output is 110 hp (81 kW) at 7,750 rpm and the maximum torque of 86 lb/ft (116 Nm) peaks at 6,000 rpm, with a maximum engine speed of 8,500 rpm.

Engine mapping has been redefined for use in the R nineT Scrambler with a view to satisfying the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class. At the same time, the fuel system has been fitted with a carbon canister for tank ventilation purposes.

Control of the four valves is via two overhead chain-driven camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder. Valve activation is handled by very light and therefore speed-resistant rocker arms, and valve clearance compensation is by means of light hemispherical shims.

Power transmission to the rear wheel is via the well-established 6-speed gearbox and the universal-shaft drive. As befits the riding dynamics of the new BMW Motorrad Scrambler, a shortened final driver ratio is used for the best possible acceleration and optimum gear connections.

Raised, close-mounted exhaust in typical Scrambler style for a striking boxer sound.

The raised exhaust with two vertically arranged rear silencers made of blasted high-grade steel meets the requirements of a classic Scrambler with an authentic air-cooled engine. It is mounted deliberately close to the body of the R nineT Scrambler, thereby emphasizing the bike's slim appearance – a style that already defined the typical Scrambler more than 50 years ago.

The new Scrambler has an electric servomotor and an acoustic valve controlled by opening and closing cables so as to meet the desire for a particularly robust boxer sound while still complying with noise emissions regulations. In addition, a large-size catalytic converter ensures even more effective exhaust gas cleaning.

The BMW Motorrad accessory program also gives customers a range of individualization options for the exhaust system so as to be able to adapt the new Heritage BMW entirely to their own personal taste.

Distinctive frame concept with newly defined suspension geometry and various customization possibilities

The new R nineT Scrambler addresses the desire of many motorcycle fans to be able to make technical and visual modifications – known as customizing – by means of a special frame concept. For this purpose, the bike features a completely newly developed steel tubular space frame which is modular in structure. It comprises three components: a main front section, a rear section with integrated end section and a passenger frame. These three frame components are bolted together.

As in the R nineT Roadster before it, the passenger frame in the Scrambler can be detached, allowing owners to change the look and therefore also the character of the dynamic BMW boxer according to personal taste.

In line with the bike’s active riding character, the suspension geometry is mainly geared towards good handling and a neutral cornering response, offering lots of riding enjoyment on winding country roads. The wheelbase is 60.1 inches, the castor 4.4 inches and the steering head angle 61.5 degrees.

Purist Scrambler feeling - both with and without a passenger.

As equipped, the new BMW Scrambler enables two up riding. The seat height for the rider is approximately 32.3 inches, which in conjunction with a narrow inside leg width, provides comfortable seating for both rider and passenger.

If the intention is to go on more ambitious solo rides, the passenger frame can simply be detached, giving the rear a particularly compact and light appearance. This reinforces the character of the R nineT Scrambler as an uncompromising riding machine reduced to the absolute essentials.

Relaxed seating position thanks to special ergonomics.

In addition to optimal handling qualities, a relaxed seating position is one of the key properties of a Scrambler. For this purpose, the ergonomic triangle of handlebars-seat-footrests was redefined with the aim of achieving a much more upright seating position. The handlebars were raised further than those on the R nineT by means of a newly designed fork bridge with raised clamp blocks, while the padding of the seat surface was slightly reduced. At the same time, the rider footrests were positioned slightly lower down and further to the rear. The BMW Motorrad range of accessories also offers other seat solutions for individualization of the new R nineT Scrambler.

Classic wheel suspension by means of telescopic fork at the front and Paralever at the rear.

In keeping with the traditional style of a Scrambler, a conventionally structured telescopic fork with a tube diameter of 43 millimeters and a spring travel of 4.9 inches takes care of the front suspension. As in numerous Scrambler models of bygone days, classic rubber gaiters protect the open slide areas of the fixed fork tubes.

Rear wheel suspension is taken care of in tried and tested fashion by a Paralever single-sided swinging arm as featured in the other boxer models. Suspension and damping functions are taken care of by a central spring strut with a spring finished in white and a spring travel of 5.5 inches. The spring rest is adjustable and rebound-stage damping can also be set to continuously variable levels.

An interesting feature supporting further customization is the housing of the rear-wheel drive. As with other boxer models, this has three mounting points which can be used for the side attachment of items like a license plate and lighting unit depending on local regulations.

Light alloy cast wheels and enduro style footrests.

The new BMW Scrambler is supplied with light alloy cast wheels. The large 19-inch front wheel with 120/70-19 tire is in keeping with the typical Scrambler look. This is matched perfectly at the rear with a 17-inch tire, size 170/60-17. The new BMW boxer can be ordered with the extra of deep-treaded dual-sport tires in classic style (standard trim: road tires) and with cross-spoke wheels as factory options.

The footrest system also highlights the bike's rustic, masculine character. Enduro-style toothed steel footrests with removable rubber inserts ensure stable, secure support in all conditions.

The technical counterpart to the impressive contemporary riding dynamics of the new R nineT Scrambler is a dual disc brake. With 4-piston brake calipers, steel-wrapped brake lines and a brake disc diameter of 320 millimeters, it ensures high-performance and stable deceleration even when traveling at speed. At the rear, deceleration is ensured by a single-disc brake with a diameter of 265 millimeters and a 2-piston floating caliper. Like all BMW motorcycles, the new Scrambler comes with BMW Motorrad ABS as standard. In addition to this standard ABS, Automatic Stability Control is also available a factory option for increased safety when accelerating.

Special on-board electrical system for extended scope when customizing.

A far-reaching modification of the BMW Scrambler’s electrical system allows riders to further customize and hone its profile according to their preferences. The parameters and interfaces in the electrical system have been selected so that alternative electrical components such as headlamps and turn indicators can be installed if desired.

The separation of the engine and vehicle wiring harness allows the motorcycle to be customized more extensively with less effort. This is of particular interest to professional customizers.

Design and color concept

Purist design and attention to detail.

Whether fitted with the standard light alloy cast wheels or the optional cross-spoke wheels, whether enjoying a ride with a passenger or solo – the R nineT Scrambler is supreme and impeccably stylish in all situations. Its silhouette signals laid-back elegance, the classic proportions being largely established by the boxer engine, a compact sheet steel fuel tank and the slim-lined, filigree rear.

One important design objective was to ensure that the body features were reduced to achieve a purist appearance. By limiting the design elements to the motorcycle essentials, the new BMW Scrambler conveys its character highly effectively with a just a few carefully designed components. From all angles, the BMW Motorrad Scrambler blends classic and modern elements of motorcycle design with high-quality surfaces.

Slim front section.

As the central feature of the front silhouette, the classic circular headlamp of the R nineT Scrambler expresses experience, poise and serenity. The slim proportions are established by the classic look of the boxer engine and the narrow 19-inch front wheel. Just like the Scrambler specimens of the 1950s to 1970s, the headlamp can also be fitted with a protective grill (Not legal for road use).

Perfectly integrated in the front section, the instrument cluster features a classic circular speedometer with analog display and integrated indicator lights. Housed in a high-end metal casing, the simplicity of the speedometer reflects the classic principles observed in developing the BMW Scrambler. The range of BMW Motorrad accessories also allows the addition of a classic engine speedometer with analog display.

In addition, the R nineT Scrambler comes standard with a dual-row LCD display showing important information such as time and trip distance.

Painted fuel tank with contrasting aluminum trim.

Eye-catching elements are the painted 4.5 gallon sheet-steel fuel tank and the trim cover made of fine aluminum with an embossed R nineT inscription which runs across the air intake duct on the right-hand side. As a striking technical contrast to the painted fuel tank surface, the air intake has a clear anodized surface - an eye-catching, finely brushed technical look.

As part of the range of factory options and special accessories, the R nineT Scrambler can also be individualized with an aluminum fuel tank featuring either visible or sanded seams.

Harmonious classic details, skilfully applied.

The new BMW boxer conveys a sense of high-quality workmanship in numerous details. For instance, the fork bridges with tapered screws and the conical shape of the mount for the steering damper are high-end forged aluminum parts with a surface that is glass-bead blasted and then clear anodized. The clamp for the double-butted aluminum tubular handlebars, also made of aluminum, bears an engraved BMW Motorrad inscription, and there are bore holes at the steering head that allow the attachment of a riveted type number plate (special accessory) reminiscent of historic BMW motorcycles.

Historic role models drawn from nine decades of BMW Motorrad history are also echoed in the circular headlamp with sheet steel casing and the BMW emblem positioned centrally on the bulb cover. In corresponding style, the R nineT Scrambler is fitted with white turn signals and LED rear light.

Another interesting detail is the front fender. It is bolted to the slider tubes by means of a fork stabilizer, skilfully highlighting the use of classic motorcycle construction elements.

The tapered and stitched two-person seat in Saddle Brown simulated leather demonstrates refined workmanship and the use of high-end materials. As an alternative here, the range of accessories provides a solo seat with a typical Scrambler-style tail panel that further enhances the dynamic and masculine feel of the BMW Scrambler.

Classic, purist color concept.

The new BMW R nineT Scrambler is finished in the color Monolith metallic matt, which is also found on the fuel tank and headlamp housing.

The bike's classic, purist character is enhanced by black components such as the frame, swing arm, wheels, fork slider tubes and engine housing. Meanwhile, numerous aluminum surfaces create fascinating contrasts and a technical look.

The front fender and the tail panel of the solo seat - if mounted - are finished in black silk matt, emphasizing the bike's classic appearance.

Equipment program.

An individually harmonized range of BMW Motorrad options, special accessories and rider equipment items perfectly match the overall concept of the R nineT Scrambler.

Factory options are supplied directly and are integrated during the production process. Special accessories are installed by the BMW Motorrad dealer or by customers themselves. These are features which can also be retrofitted.

The New BMW C 650 Sport and C 650 GT

Dynamic Scooters For Sport Riding, Touring and Urban Cruising

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 20, 2015…With the new BMW C 650 Sport and C 650 GT, BMW Motorrad continues its series of premium vehicles in the scooter segment. Perfect for the city and other urban environments, they combine practicality and cost-efficiency with maximum riding fun and touring comfort. Riders with fondness for sport riding will appreciate their prowess on winding country roads as well as lengthier tours.

The differing conceptual emphasis of each of the two BMW scooters reaches a broader market segment than earlier scooters: the C 650 Sport is geared towards riders with sportier ambitions, while the C 650 GT sets its sights on those who attach greater importance to comfort and touring capability.

With an extensively modified drivetrain, more comfortable suspension settings and a completely revised design for the C 650 Sport, they offer – more than ever before – the excellent ride qualities of a motorcycle with the specific agility and comfort offered by the scooter concept.

Optimal drivetrain set-up and new exhaust system for a more active riding experience.

The 2-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 647 cc once again ensures dynamic propulsion in the new scooters. The rated output in both models is 60 hp (44 kW) at 7,500 rpm. Engine mapping was redefined for use in the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT to satisfy the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class. In addition, a new silencer gives the vehicles a more dynamic look as well as provides a particularly full sound while adhering to the new ECE R41-04 noise test regulations.

A new CVT transmission set-up in conjunction with new clutch linings enables optimal clutch engagement and therefore a significantly more dynamic take-off response. This was achieved by changing the transmission ratio spread of the CVT as well as by fine-tuning the centrifugal force weights.

New suspension and damper set-up for increased comfort.

The suspension construction of the new C 650 Sport and C 650 GT continues to use a torsionally stiff hybrid composite structure consisting of a tubular steel bridge frame and a die-cast aluminum unit in the area of the swingarm bearing. Retaining the existing spring travel of 4.5 inches in each case, it was possible to create a more comfortable suspension set-up. As a result, the C 650 Sport and C 650 GT offer a perfect compromise between sport riding and comfort.

Standard ABS and ASC significantly improve safety when braking and accelerating..

Based on the “Safety 360°” principle, the optimum design of the brake system in conjunction with the standard BMW Motorrad ABS Bosch 9.1MB ensures the very highest level of active riding safety. Another safety bonus is the ASC (Automatic Stability Control), which is now equipped as standard.

Completely new dynamic design for the C 650 Sport and detailed stylistic fine-tuning for the C 650 GT.

The new edition of the two models features a more modern, dynamic and future-oriented design for the C 650 Sport. This integrates it seamlessly in the BMW Motorrad design philosophy. By contrast the C 650 GT – positioned in the Comfort sub-segment – has been fine-tuned with new rear side trim panels and a new rear light unit. Both models have also been fitted with newly designed instrument dials as well as new handlebar trim. Other new features include the revised design of the center stand, which improves the ease of operation.

The attractive paint finishes of the new C 650 Sport and C 650 GT.

The C 650 Sport and C 650 GT are each offered in three color variations. The Valencia Orange metallic matt of the C 650 Sport highlights its athletic character and in conjunction with the contrasting surfaces gives it a dynamic, modern appearance. By contrast, Lightwhite non-metallic makes the new C 650 Sport look premium, compact and light. In Blackstorm metallic, the new C 650 Sport appeals to a more classically oriented rider. In the C 650 GT, Blackstorm metallic highlights the elegant character of the vehicle, while Frozen Bronze metallic in conjunction with a contrasting tone creates a harmonious paint finish that clearly emphasizes the styling of the new C 650 GT. Lightwhite non-metallic highlights the dynamic side of the C 650 GT. This color gives it a particularly light and agile look.

An overview of the new features in the C 650 Sport and C 650 GT:

  • New CVT set-up in conjunction with revised clutch linings for more dynamic clutch

engagement and a more spontaneous take-off response.

  • New suspension and damping set-up for an ideal compromise between sport and comfort.
  • In addition to ABS, ASC is also nowstandard for improved safety when accelerating.
  • Completely new, dynamic design for the C 650 Sport.
  • Detailed stylistic fine-tuning for the C 650 GT.
  • New silencer for a fuller sound and more dynamic appearance.
  • New instrument dial design.
  • New handlebar trim elements with chrome applications.
  • New, higher-quality surfaces (with graining effects).
  • Revised design of the center stand for easier use.
  • New paint finishes for the C 650 Sport: Valencia Orange metallic matt,
    Lightwhite non-metallic and Blackstorm metallic.
  • New paint finishes for the C 650 GT: Blackstorm metallic, Frozen Bronze metallic and Lightwhite non-metallic.

Vehicle Technology and Design.

Powerful 2-cylinder in-line engine with an improved CVT and new exhaust system.

In the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT, the 2-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 647 cc once again ensures dynamic propulsion. The rated output in both models is 60 hp (44 kW)     at 7,500 rpm. The maximum torque of 46.5 ft/lb (63 Nm) is available at 6,000 rpm. The maximum engine speed is 8,500 rpm.

In order to achieve a low mounting position and therefore a low center of gravity, the engine has a cylinder bank that is tilted forward by 70 degrees. The characteristic sound and low level of vibration are due to the 90-degree crankpin offset, 270-degree ignition spacing and two counterbalance shafts powered by spur gears.

The sophisticated cooling concept ensures optimum thermal balance in the 2-cylinder in-line engine. Here, coolant flows transversely through the cylinder head, entering at the front of the cylinder head on the hot exhaust side. The intensive cooling effect rapidly dissipates the heat precisely at the point of maximum thermal stress, thereby ensuring excellent temperature compensation. The aluminum radiator with plastic water containers and integrated thermostat has the same high-performance radiator network as is used in BMW motorcycles. Due to its high degree of efficiency and excellent air intake and through-flow, a relatively small surface is sufficient for operationally reliable heat dissipation in all conditions.

Carburation of the 4-valve engine with two overhead camshafts is handled by an electronic fuel injection system. Meanwhile, oil is supplied by a dry sump system with a dual oil pump, and an efficient cooling concept ensures optimum thermal balance in the 2-cylinder engine. Engine mapping was redefined for use in the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT with a view to satisfying the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class.

Power transmission is by means of a directly integrated CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which underwent extensive revisions for use in the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT. As a result, a new CVT set-up in conjunction with an optimal clutch provides more responsive acceleration.

Softer springs and optimal clutch linings are used in the centrifugal clutch.

In addition to increased roller weights, the transmission ratio spread of the CVT has been increased from 2.42 to 2.95. The long CVT ratio is now 0.82 instead of 1.00. The gear reduction ratio between the CVT output shaft and driven shaft has been shortened from 2.72 to 3.28.

In addition to a more spontaneous take-off response, this also makes for an increased top speed (112 rather than 108 mph).

The new exhaust system is still made of stainless steel, but does not have a front silencer in the new C 650 Sport or GT. Fitted only with a rear silencer, it now offers a particularly full and throaty sound.

New suspension and damping set-up for increased comfort in the C 650 Sport and C 650 GT.

The suspension construction of the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT continues to use a torsionally rigid hybrid composite structure consisting of a tubular steel bridge frame and a die-cast aluminum unit in the area of the swingarm bearing. In addition, the 2-cylinder in-line engine acts as a self-supporting element, thereby ensuring a highly rigid structure that results in a stable and directionally precise riding response.

The mounting of the light alloy, cast, single-sided swingarm with coaxial pivot point also addresses the desire for maximum ride stability. In this way the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT combine solid directional stability at high speeds on the highway with easy maneuverability in city traffic as well as transparent feedback for the rider – just like a motorcycle.

The spring elements now go further toward meeting sophisticated demands in terms of sporty flair and comfort. For example, the spring rate of the upside-down fork with its generously sized fork tube diameter of 40 millimeters was changed, as was that of the spring strut, which is horizontally mounted on the left for optimal accessibility of the adjustment mechanism.

A reduction of the spring rate by ten percent now ensures a more fine-tuned response across the entire range without negatively impacting vehicle stability. Retaining the previous spring travel of 4.5 inches front and rear, it was possible to achieve an ideal compromise between ambitious sport-style riding and comfortable travel.

Meanwhile, the 15-inch wheels ensure maximum ride stability as well as excellent agility and handling. At the front, the C 650 Sport and C 650 GT both have a 5-spoke die-cast light alloy wheel sized 3.5 × 15 inches. The tire size is 120/70 R 15. The dimension of the rear wheel is 4.5 × 15 inches and it is fitted with a tire size of 160/60 R 15.

For the center stand, the design and position of the setting pin were updated for increased ease and convenience. As a result, 30 per cent less physical effort is required.

ABS and ASC as standard for maximum safety when braking and accelerating.

In keeping with BMW Motorrad tradition, the optimal design of the braking system in conjunction with standard BMW Motorrad ABS ensures the very highest level of active riding safety. For the front, a twin disc braking system with a diameter of 270 millimeters includes two 2-piston floating calipers for ideal deceleration. For the rear, this function is performed by a single-disc system also with a diameter of 270 millimeters and a 2-piston floating caliper.

In order to achieve stable pressure and optimal control, all brake lines are steel-wrapped. Adapting ergonomics to individual rider needs, the grip distance of both brake levers can be adjusted in five different increments.

The extremely small and light 2-channel Bosch 9.1MB ABS enables independent regulation of the two brake circuits for the front and rear brake, so controlled and reliable braking is possible even in cases of adverse road conditions or in dangerous situations.

Another safety bonus – especially on slippery road surfaces (i.e. where there is a low friction coefficient) – is now provided by Automatic Stability Control ASC as a standard factory-equipped feature. Wheel slip is detected by the engine management system and, if necessary, engine torque is reduced.

Parking brake activated automatically via side stand.

BMW Motorrad was able to develop a particularly innovative solution for the parking brake, which is a compulsory feature for scooters. While the brake normally has to be activated by the rider using a separate lever, in the C 650 Sport and C 650 GT this happens automatically when the side stand is folded down. Here, a second mechanically operated brake caliper is activated at the rear by means of a cable pull, ensuring the vehicle is unable to roll away and ensure secure parking.

Multifunctional instrument cluster with wide-ranging information functions.

The electrical system of the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT is also based on the well-established vehicle electrical system found in BMW Motorcycle models. It is a CAN (Controller Area Network) bus system. A power socket is installed in the left-hand storage compartment as standard. This can be used to charge a mobile phone during travel, for example, while it is connected simultaneously to the BMW Motorrad Communication System in the rider's helmet via Bluetooth.

The instrument cluster on the scooter provides a wide range of information. It has a large, easily readable LCD screen with integrated engine speed display and an analog speedometer with a newly designed scale for perfect reading. In addition, all indicator lights have been integrated in the instrument cluster. In developing the instrument cluster, particular importance was attached to excellent clarity as well as to the elimination of reflections on the display. The lighting of the analog speedometer and LCD display is orange-colored for easy readability.

Another comfort feature is the automatic turn indicator reset function. Here, the turn indicators are automatically deactivated after a period of at least ten seconds or a distance of 230 yards.

In addition to the fuel level display with eight bar symbols, the instrument cluster provides information on distances covered. It also displays data drawn from the on-board computer, such as mileage remaining after reaching a fuel level of 1 gallon, date and time, average fuel consumption and speed, outside temperature and service information.

In the upper section of the display, warning messages are shown in the form of text and symbols, for example if a bulb fails. The operating condition of the heated grips and seat heating – available as a factory option – is also shown on the display.

LED lighting and ‘Way Home’ function.

As in the predecessor models, the two scooters C 650 Sport and C 650 GT are fitted as standard with a rear light and storage compartment lighting featuring LED technology. The particular benefits of LEDs include a high level of reliability, a long service life, a high light yield and low power consumption.

The front light of the C 650 Sport comprises one headlamp each for low and high beam and two position lights.

The C 650 GT also has two headlamps. There is a ‘Way Home’ function for the position lights and storage compartment lighting, meaning that they remain on after the vehicle has been parked.

Completely new dynamic design for the C 650 Sport and detailed stylistic fine-tuning for the C 650 GT.

Even when the models were originally launched, the design of the BMW C 650 Sport and the C 650 GT set the benchmark in the scooter segment. In visual terms the two BMW Motorrad scooters are clearly distinct from their competitors – one with its sporty, dynamic styling, the other luxurious and elegant.

The new edition of the two models gives the C 650 Sport a more modern, dynamic and future-oriented touch, integrating it seamlessly in the BMW Motorrad design philosophy. Meanwhile, the C 650 GT has been fine-tuned with new rear side trim panels, a new rear LED light unit and new handlebar trim.

Visual and technical orientation of the new C 650 Sport and the new C 650 GT towards BMW motorcycles.

The BMW Motorrad kinship of the two new scooters is clearly reflected, both in their technology and their visual appearance. A generously sized upside-down fork and twin disc brake are the dominant features of the front. The rear is dominated by a single-sided swingarm, dynamically designed in a style that is typical of BMW motorcycles and featuring a large, hollow wheel axle. The characteristic division of the front silhouette into two halves – the so-called split face – is another striking design feature that is typical of BMW Motorrad models.

In both vehicles the handlebar protectors exhibit new styling with a high-gloss central section and chrome applications, while all grained surfaces within the rider's field of vision have been updated. What is more, the mounting of the rear mirrors has been optimized for the C 650 GT to provide riders the best rear view in all conditions.

More dynamic, sportier appearance for the C 650 Sport.

The new C 650 Sport features completely redesigned body parts and a new paint finish. This fresh design interprets the appearance of the scooter in a way that expresses maximum dynamic performance. The effect of closed geometry in the front section puts a visual emphasis on the front wheel. By contrast, the rear section is focused on adding character with detailed styling, creating proportions that further push the sense of dynamics and movement toward the front wheel. Here, the surfaces are more streamlined, conveying sporty flair and agility. Styling in the seat area also underscores this sporty character, while double tapered surfaces evoke a striking athletic style.

Genetic styling connection with the BMW Motorrad sport oriented bikes.

Based on the genes of the BMW Motorrad sport oriented bikes, a DNA line starting from the high rear runs deep into the front wheel, finishing in the athletic styling of the front section. The low-reaching front section and the high rear give the new C 650 Sport a definite forward thrust from the side view, and the dynamic line rising to the rear makes a sporty statement within the tautly styled silhouette. Every line and every surface of the C 650 Sport was deliberately reworked.

Striking surface styling and precise lines give the side a sense of slenderness and speed. The even sportier and more dynamic appearance of the C 650 Sport is massively enhanced by the new rear silencer mounted on the right-hand side, promising power and riding dynamics. Even more markedly than in the C 650 GT, the easily visible spring of the spring strut finished in white lends an unmistakable technical and dynamic emphasis to the C 650 Sport.

Form and function are perfectly blended in the lower side trim panels. These elements provide wind and weather protection for the rider while also acting as a faring component. Details, such as stainless steel inserts in the floorboards, round off this area with a touch of exclusivity.

Sporty flair, dynamic performance and agility are the central styling statements of the new C 650 Sport.

From the front, the new C 650 Sport instantly exhibits its BMW Motorrad kinship. The slim silhouette with a pronounced V-shape conveys maneuverability and agility. At the same time, the pattern of painted surfaces and trim parts emphasizes the striking shoulders, injecting power and sculpture into the front section.

The heavily tilted, symmetrical headlamps give the new C 650 Sport a focused, determined look. The dynamically contoured light outlets have deliberately been recessed to give the front a low, sporty appearance. The interplay between the painted exterior surfaces and the central front trim section in the contrasting finish of dark slate, enhanced by the different surface textures, also provides a interesting contrast. The front fender compliments the split face, its striking geometry emphasizing its streamlined appearance.

The slender silhouette of the rear view expresses the agility and maneuverability of the new C 650 Sport. The twin-pipe silencer emphasizes the power and riding dynamics of the new     scooter while also making authentic reference to the 2-cylinder engine. The new C 650 Sport underscores its modern, dynamic character with its rear carrier design. Durable in structure, it acts as a license plate holder and also features a luggage rack mounted on the grab handles that acts as a mount for an optional top case.

High-quality workmanship for riders focusing on material quality and functionality.

The new C 650 Sport presents the rider with generous surfaces and high-quality materials. The design of the rider’s cockpit deliberately conveys the impression of a full-fledged interior. The clear styling of the display elements provides excellent clarity and the newly designed circular instrument dial has a clear, refined graphic that is reminiscent of an exclusive wristwatch. The fresh style of the shapes and surfaces also means that details such as the gas cap, grab handles and seat seams have been revised.

Generous storage, including BMW flex-case, in the C 650 Sport.

Although the rear section of the C 650 Sport is considerably more slender and sporty in style, BMW Motorrad developers were able to integrate a storage concept with sufficient space for two helmets in this model. The so-called BMW flex-case was developed for this purpose. This comprises a flap in the rear base which can be opened to provide a downward extension of the storage space. This versatility is enabled by the use of a highly rigid but pliable material based on Kevlar that creates a flexible yet dirt-resistant and waterproof connection between the flap and the rear base. Globally unique to date, this BMW Motorrad patented storage solution allows two helmets to be stored when the scooter is parked. During travel, the BMW flex-case is folded, preserving the slim, sporty silhouette. A safety switch prevents the engine from being started when the BMW flex-case is open.

Meanwhile, in the C 650 GT, the generous storage space includes a large compartment (approx. 60 liters) under the seat and emphasizes the vehicle's high level of suitability for touring and long-distance riding. The storage compartment at the rear of the C 650 GT has interior lighting and space for two helmets.

Both models offer additional storage space at the front of the step-through frame in the form of two glove compartments, and the one on the left-hand side includes a locking function. It is locked automatically when the vehicle is parked and locked. The newly designed storage compartment release levers in the C 650 Sport now feature a higher-quality chrome surface. Other carefully conceived solutions, such as heated handlebar grips (factory option) and an adjustable windshield (electrically adjustable in the C 650 GT), ensure a high level of comfort and everyday practicality.

The differences between the C 650 Sport and C 650 GT are also reflected in their ergonomics. In line with its dynamic aspirations, the C 650 Sport has a seat height of 31.5 inches, ensuring a sporty, front-wheel-oriented seating position in conjunction with the flat positioning of the handlebars. In the C 650 GT the seat height is 31.7 inches. In combination with the higher handlebars, this results in a touring-style riding posture that is both upright and comfortable.

The New BMW G 310 R

The First BMW Roadster Under 500 cc

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 20, 2015… One cylinder, lightweight, powerful dynamic performance – the BMW G 310 R embodies the pure essence of a BMW roadster: it has neither too little nor too much of anything. Pragmatic in the best sense of the word, it offers precisely what is needed – for dynamic performance and comfort, both in town and out in the country. The BMW G 310 R takes these essential qualities into an engine-capacity segment that is new to BMW Motorrad. As a genuine BMW roadster it masters a range of disciplines: it is just as happy winding its way nimbly and flexibly through the narrow streets of a city as it is travelling supremely and powerfully along country roads. And thanks to its exceptionally low level of fuel consumption and a relaxed, comfortable seating position, it offers the welcome capability of being able to cover long distances.

At home on the roads of the world.

Newly conceived from scratch, the G 310 R represents everything BMW Motorrad stands for: innovation, quality and many years of carefree partnership with its owner. Designed specifically for the world market, the BMW G 310 R can run on the most diverse fuel qualities, meets all emission standards and local requirements – and establishes BMW in the segment under 500 cc.

Dynamic roadster design with echoes of the S 1000 R.

The powerfully expressive design of the BMW G 310 R instantly reveals its agile, dynamic character, making a clear statement within its own segment. It has an unmistakable visual kinship with athletic family members such as the BMW S 1000 R. The small headlamp mask with striking headlamp, dynamically modelled fuel tank trim elements and characteristic roadster proportions with a striking front section and dynamic rear give the BMW G 310 R a mature presence on the road. Precisely sculpted surfaces define the dynamic side view. The compact, dynamic proportions and the short wheelbase promise fast changes of direction, while the high rear conveys a lightness that is suggestive of the bike's sporty genes. In spite of the clearly visible naked bike character of the BMW G 310 R, the side surfaces in body color create a closed silhouette in athletic style. High-end details such as a standard upside-down fork, quality materials, supplementary fittings and excellent workmanship are best-in-class within the segment, clearly underscoring the premium aspiration of the BMW G 310 R.

Innovative single-cylinder engine for dynamic riding fun and suitability for a broad range of uses worldwide.

The centerpiece of the new BMW G 310 R is a completely newly developed 313 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves and two overhead camshafts together with electronic fuel injection. The capacity of 313 cc results from a bore of 80 millimeters and a stroke of 62.1 millimeters.

The striking feature of the engine is its backward-tilted cylinder in open-deck design with the cylinder head turned by 180 degrees, making it possible to position the intake tract at the front, viewed in the direction of travel. With an output of 34 hp (25 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 21 lb/ft (28 Nm) at 7,500 rpm, the engine of the new G 310 R is a very dynamic partner in conjunction with the low unladen weight of 349 lbs.

Sophisticated ergonomics and an easy ride response.

The new G 310 R offers a markedly relaxed seating position for relaxed, stress-free and easy-going motorcycling. As is characteristic of BMW Motorrad, all switches and controls are easy to handle. Great importance was attached to simple and safe operation, taking into account the most diverse rider anatomies.

The new G 310 R banks with ultimate agility, yet always remains neutral and predictable. It masters lengthy bends and fast passages with directional stability, displaying athletic talent without any loss of comfort. Extremely compact and with a broad spectrum of ride responsiveness, ranging from comfortable to sporty and dynamic, the new G 310 R simply opens up a whole new world of experience in its segment.

Rigid tubular steel frame, upside-down fork and a long swingarm for a high degree of ride stability, precise steering response and sound handling. In terms of suspension, the new G 310 R has a torsionally stiff, highly robust tubular steel frame in grid structure with bolt-on rear frame. The front wheel suspension is taken care of by a solid upside-down fork while at the rear there is an aluminum swingarm in conjunction with a spring strut that is mounted on it directly.

Standard high-performance brake system with ABS and multifunction instrument cluster.

Like all BMW motorcycles, the new G 310 R is fitted with ABS as standard. It combines a powerful brake system with 2-channel ABS. The new BMW G 310 R – the first BMW roadster under 500 cc.

One cylinder, low weight, powerful dynamic performance – the BMW G 310 R embodies the pure essence of a BMW roadster: it has neither too little nor too much of anything. Pragmatic in the best sense of the word, it offers precisely what is needed – for dynamic performance and comfort, both in town and out in the country.

The BMW G 310 R takes these essential qualities into a capacity segment that is new to BMW Motorrad. As a genuine BMW roadster it masters a range of disciplines. Whether for the daily ride to work or when breaking away from routine: it is just as happy winding its way nimbly and flexibly through the narrow streets of a city as it is travelling supremely and powerfully along country roads. And thanks to its low level of fuel consumption and a relaxed, comfortable seating position, it offers the welcome capability of being able to cover a long distance at a time. Newly conceived from scratch, the G 310 R represents everything BMW Motorrad stands for: innovation, quality and of course many years of carefree partnership with its owner.

Single-cylinder tradition – reinterpreted by BMW Motorrad.

From the BMW R 39 – the first ever BMW motorcycle with a single-cylinder engine 90 years ago – to the R 25 models and the F 650 series established in the 1990s: easy control, thrilling riding dynamics and high efficiency have always been core qualities of the BMW Motorrad single-cylinder models.

BMW Motorrad now perpetuates this tradition in fresh, cutting-edge style with the G 310 R. Designed as a light, dynamic roadster, it combines athletic talents with solid comfort to make a perfect partner for all situations – due to its low weight, maneuverability and an engine that produces lively and vigorous power from a single cylinder.

Designed for the world market and offering compatibility with various fuel qualities, the compression ratio is a comparatively moderate 10.6:1. With an output of 34 hp (25 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 21 lb/ft (28 Nm) at 7,500 rpm, the engine of the new G 310 R is a very dynamic partner in conjunction with the low unladen wet weight of 349 lbs, according to DIN guidelines.

Backward-tilted cylinder and cylinder head turned by 180 degrees for perfect packaging and a high degree of efficiency.

Unlike conventional single-cylinder concepts, the engine of the new G 310 R offers a series of unusual technical solutions. First and foremost, the engine is striking with its backward-tilted cylinder and cylinder head turned by 180 degrees. The intake tract is positioned at the front, facing the direction of travel, while the exhaust tract is at the rear. The ignition spark is supplied by a spark plug placed centrally in the combustion chamber.

This configuration not only follows the logic of a straight, power-enhancing supply of fresh fuel-air mixture, it also has positive consequences in terms of the architecture of the bike as a whole. In conjunction with the consecutively positioned transmission shafts, this creates a low center of gravity that is shifted towards the front wheel as compared to a conventional arrangement. At the same time, this set-up and the preservation of an advantageously short wheelbase allows for a longer swingarm, thereby ensuring a stable ride response. The result is agile handling, clear feedback from the front wheel and outstanding control.

The engine concept with the intake side at the front makes for a generously sized intake silencer positioned directly behind the steering head and a very short fuel tank. This prevents any excessive sloshing of the fuel back and forth, so undesirable reactions to uncontrolled shifts in weight are avoided.

High-performance valve gear based on the S 1000 RR, DLC-coated engine components and Nikasil cylinder liner.

Fitted with an electric starter motor, the single-cylinder engine of the new G 310 R offers modern, horizontal separation of the engine housing, innovative technical solutions and a selection of high-quality materials. The valve gear with two overhead camshafts is based on that of the S 1000 RR, while very light, highly resistant rocker arms with a very hard DLC coating (Diamond Like Carbon) that minimizes friction and wear are responsible for activating the four valves, as in the BMW superbike. The valve angle is 11.2 degrees on the intake side and 13.3 degrees on the exhaust side. The diameter of the intake valves is 33.5 millimeters, that of the exhaust valves is 27.2 millimeters and that of the intake pipe fuel injection throttle valve is 42 millimeters.

The resilient and low-friction DLC coating is also used for the piston pin. It enables the pin to run directly in the eye of the ground connecting rod, eliminating the need for an additional plain bearing. In conjunction with the low weight of the cast lightweight piston, this results in reduced oscillating masses. The slide bearing for the lower connecting rod eye and the main camshaft bearing is also by no means typical of a single-cylinder engine, offering benefits in terms of space, weight and durability. A low-friction Nikasil coating on the sleeve of the cylinder (integrated in the upper half of the engine housing) highlights the fact that the BMW Motorrad engineers have set out to combine lightweight construction and fuel efficiency with modern, groundbreaking engine technology.

Effective lubrication and cooling system for maximum reliability, even in adverse conditions.

The vital supply of oil inside the engine is handled by a well-established wet sump lubrication system. Here there is a labyrinth of baffles inside the oil sump that reliably counters any lack of lubrication during extreme riding maneuvers.

The liquid cooling system ensures excellent thermal stability, even in very high outdoor temperatures. The coolant circulates through a generously sized radiator positioned underneath the steering head section.

Six-speed gearbox, high maximum engine speed and counterbalance shaft for lively dynamic performance and excellent running smoothness.

Power transmission is via a multi-plate wet clutch onto a well-graduated, constant-mesh 6-speed gearbox. The final drive to the rear wheel takes the form of an O-ring chain. With a spontaneous throttle response, lively pulling power, full-blooded engine characteristics and a high maximum engine speed of 10,500 rpm, the new G 310 R delivers very dynamic riding performance figures for excellent riding fun within its class.

Added to that, a rotating counterbalance shaft in front of the crankshaft effectively suppresses unpleasant vibrations, ensuring a high level of running smoothness for the single-cylinder segment. Fitted with a closed-loop catalytic converter positioned on the intake side of the rear silencer, the BMW engine control BMS-E2 and a secondary air system make the engine of the new G 310 R extremely environmentally-friendly, allowing adherence to the EU4 emission standard.

Rigid tubular steel frame and long swingarm for a high degree of ride stability, precise steering response and light handling.

Extremely compact and with a broad spectrum, ranging from comfortable to sporty and dynamic, the new G 310 R opens up a whole new world of experience in its segment when it comes to ride response. It banks with ultimate agility yet always remains neutral and predictable. It masters lengthy bends and fast passages with directional stability, displaying athletic talent without any loss of comfort.

In terms of its suspension, the new G 310 R has a torsionally stiff, highly robust tubular steel grid-style frame with a bolt-on rear frame. Given its excellent stiff balance, this provides the basis for excellent ride stability and a precise steering response. The suspension geometry of the G 310 R is designed for easy handling, stability and a neutral cornering response, which makes for maximum riding run and easily controllability as well as reflecting the bike's active riding character. The wheelbase is 54 inches, the castor is 4 inches and the steering head angle is 64.9 degrees.

Due to the engine concept and arrangement, the single-section rear-wheel swingarm made of die-cast aluminum is longer than in conventional designs, though without extending the wheelbase unnecessarily. With its generous length of 25.6 inches, it supports the bike's high level of neutrality, enables exemplary pitch compensation and reacts to load shift changes in a much gentler way. As a result, the new G 310 R combines easy handling, maximum precision and a high level of ride stability with benefits in terms of suspension and load shift response.

Upside-down fork at front and directly mounted spring strut at rear for a broad range of use on all roads.

The ride properties of the G 310 R, characterized by easy handling and a high level of stability, are supported by the balanced suspension/damper set-up of the directly mounted rear spring strut which is adjustable for spring preload. The progressively wound spring distributes the spring rates in such a way that precisely applies the desired suspension resistance, depending on the position within spring travel: comfortable for everyday riding, with sufficient reserves for more aggressive sport riding and firm enough when hard bumps or pot holes challenge the reserves. The spring travel is 5.2 inches.

The appropriate counterpart to the control, suspension and damping of the rear wheel can be found in the upside-down fork at the front. With a slider tube diameter of 41 millimeters and generously designed light alloy fork bridges, this provides a highly rigid composite structure for exact control of the front wheel, giving the G 310 R a directionally precise and secure steering response. In conjunction with the perfect set-up of the rear end, it ensures a high level of ride comfort as well as suitability for the most varied road surfaces and therefore a wide range of uses. The spring travel is 5.5”.

The new G 310 R is fitted with 5-spoke light alloy die-cast wheels in the sizes 3.0 x 17 inches at front and 4.0 x 17 inches at the rear. The tire sizes are ample to ensure a safe, dynamic ride response in all conditions: 110/70 R 17 at the front and 150/60 R 17 at the rear.

Standard High-performance brake system with ABS for safe braking maneuvers.

Like all BMW motorcycles, the new G 310 R is fitted with ABS as standard. It combines a high-performance brake system with 2-channel ABS for efficient deceleration and short braking distances as well as efficient anti-locking – entirely geared towards optimum riding safety on roads with poor riding conditions.

At the front wheel, a single-disc brake with radially bolted 4-piston fixed caliper and a brake disc diameter of 300 millimeters ensures powerful and stable deceleration. At the rear, this function is performed by a 2-piston floating caliper in conjunction with a 240-millimeter brake disc. Steel-wrapped brake lines ensures stable pressure levels.

Sophisticated ergonomics for relaxed motorcycling pleasure.

The new G 310 R offers a markedly relaxed seating position for comfortable, stress-free motorcycling that allows for ease and concentration. As is characteristic of BMW Motorrad, all switches and controls are simple and secure to handle. Great importance was attached to simple and safe operation, taking into account the most diverse rider anatomies.

The design of the ergonomic triangle consisting of handlebars, footrests and seat ensures excellent control while also providing optimal, comfortable feedback from the contact surfaces on the fuel tank and seat.

The low standard seat height of just 30.9 inches and the short inner-leg length ensure that almost every motorcyclist will instantly feel at ease on the G 310 R. Meanwhile, shorter or taller riders can draw on the range of BMW Motorrad optional accessories to select a lower or higher seat.

Multifunction instrument panel with a range of features.

The G 310 R instrument cluster has a large liquid crystal display that offers excellent clarity and a wide range of information. The displays include the following: engine speed, road speed, gear, total mileage, engine temperature, fuel tank level, remaining range, average fuel consumption, average speed, time.

Compact, dynamic proportions.

The powerfully expressive design of the BMW G 310 R instantly reveals its agile, dynamic character, making a self-assured statement within its segment. Reduced to the essentials, the proportions promise straightforward riding fun above all else: the BMW G 310 R is simply a perfect invitation to get on and ride away. This is because the newly developed engine of the BMW G 310 R is characterized by innovative mounting geometry that signals compactness and agility. Plus, the short wheelbase, low front and high, light rear offer a dynamic, agile riding experience – ideal for maneuvering in cramped urban traffic.

Despite its compact nature, the BMW G 310 R appears large and mature when compared to other models within its segment. The small headlamp mask with striking headlamp, the powerful front section and the dynamic rear give the BMW G 310 R a self-assured presence on the road. Seen from the top, too, the BMW G 310 R looks more like a model from a larger capacity segment. The powerful surfaces of the fuel tank also give it a clearly defined, muscular look.

Expressive surfaces.

Even when stationary, the precise lines and expressive interplay of light and shade on the side surfaces create an impression of motion and speed. All lines are directed towards the front wheel, thereby underscoring the easy handling of the BMW G 310 R. An especially striking feature here is the side wing contour, which protrudes from the fuel tank. Below this, the precisely shaped surfaces echo characteristic elements of higher-capacity roadsters from the BMW Motorrad portfolio, though these are given a clearly distinctive interpretation – such as the side trim that is reminiscent of the S 1000 R.

Despite the motorcycle's obvious naked bike character, the generous surfaces nonetheless produce a closed, sporty silhouette. Here, the large proportion of body color and the seamless integration of body parts without visible bolts conveys the high-end quality feel of the BMW G 310 R.

Exclusive highlights.

The uncompromising pursuit of quality down to the last detail reflect BMW Motorrad’s high aspirations with the BMW G 310 R. Exclusive highlights from the side view include the standard upside-down fork with golden slider tubes, the matching gold brake calipers, and the rear wheel swingarm. The aluminum swingarm with detailed modelling and lattice-like design conveys lightness and stability. In keeping with this, the 17" rims with 5-spoke turbine design show just what rims can look like in this segment.

Within the rider's direct field of vision, too, the BMW G 310 R features numerous visual highlights, such as polished elements and high-end materials. The aluminum fork bridge is elaborately sculpted and echoes the chiseled look of the footrests and rear wheel swingarm in its own distinct form. On the fuel tank, a high-gloss “R” engraved in the plastic surface acts as an exclusive emblem signaling the fact that the bike belongs to the roadster segment. A further exclusive touch is added by the high-gloss embossed inscriptions on the headlamp mask and license plate mount.

Individualization through a variety of colors and materials.

The BMW G 310 R is available in the three strikingly expressive colors: Cosmic Black/Polar White non-metallic, Strato Blue metallic and the elaborately designed Pearl White metallic. These color options offer an appearance ranging from sporty and modern to elegantly exclusive.

The basic color combination Cosmic Black/Polar White non-metallic makes the most of the powerful contrast between black and white. With black as the base color, white accent surfaces emphasize the modern lines of the body parts. In the engine area, additional contrast surfaces in silver add a touch of variety to the overall impression, lending a sense of lightness and modern flair to the side in the lower area.

In Strato Blue metallic, the BMW G 310 R is presented in radiant blue. Depending on the occasion and the rider's clothing, this color combination can lend an elegant, exclusive look or a touch of sporty flair. The contrast surfaces in Titanium Grey and the silver sections in the area of the engine add variety to the overall impression while also lending a touch of modern appeal. In combination with the gold accents of the fork and brake calipers, the general appearance here is one of high quality.

The highlight of the color range is Pearl White metallic, subject to an additional charge. Pearl White is the primary color here – a white with a discreet sparkle effect – against which the BMW Motorsport colors of blue and red are applied to create a striking accent graphic. The graphic runs from the fork base across the fuel tank and under the seat. Plus, a painted surface in high-gloss black provides the background for the striking interplay between the graphic and the paint finish on the side trim. Underneath, silver accent surfaces lighten up the dark engine area, adding a modern touch. The fork tubes and brake calipers provide golden accents that complement this color option.

Developed in Munich by BMW Motorrad – produced in Bangalore, India in partnership with TVS Motor Company.

The new BMW G 310 R is produced in Bangalore, India by the cooperation partner TVS Motor Company, India's third largest motorcycle manufacturer with a production volume of some 2.5 million vehicles per year. The company has been committed to sustainability for many years and attaches great importance to adhering to defined social and environmental standards which go far beyond what is common practice in India.

TVS Motor Company is the flagship of the TVS Group, which is made up of more than 90 companies in total. These include numerous firms that enjoy an excellent reputation in the automotive sector as suppliers for well-known car makers. Many of these suppliers from within the TVS Group provide the components for the G 310 R.

Quality management and state-of-the-art production following the standards of the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau.

TVS Motor Company's quality management system has been based on Japanese role models for many years. For the G 310 R, this system was extended to include the requirements and standards specific to BMW Motorrad, and within the area of quality management, there are interdisciplinary teams from both companies working in close collaboration.

A dedicated production area has been set aside in the factory for production of the G 310 R. Mechanical production of the engine components is carried out on new, high-quality machine tools made by leading German manufacturers. BMW Motorrad was closely involved in an advisory capacity here and production is set up based on the model of the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau. The engine assembly line is completely new and fitted with cutting-edge automation and testing technology for every stage of the process. All the relevant work stages are monitored and automatically recorded with regard to size accuracy, tolerances and bolt-fitting values. Assembly is carried out in a completely sealed, glazed area which can only be accessed via air locks to prevent any dirt from entering. At the end of the engine assembly line, each engine is put through a test bench run where all relevant parameters are measured including output.

Vehicle assembly is also carried out in a dedicated section of the factory reserved exclusively for BMW Motorrad. Here again, state-of-the-art assembly technology is deployed. The final inspection is performed according to BMW Motorrad standards and includes electronic functional testing as well as a final run on the roller test bench for every motorcycle. The roller test bench is also completely new and set up according to Berlin standards.

Furthermore, staff were specially selected and trained by TVS for production and assembly. Additional training programs were held for assembly workers together with colleagues from the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau over a period of more than a year prior to the start of serial production. From the very first motorcycle to come off the production line in India, they have also contributed to the high assembly standards and heightened quality awareness. All in all, production of the new BMW G 310 R is subject to the same quality criteria that apply to production at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau.
