Spartanburg, SC, Dec. 11, 2015 – When it comes to the healing process, it’s not all about doctors and medicine. Emotional and mental wellbeing plays a large role in recovery time, especially with children, who are often frightened and lonely during their hospital stay.  Making pediatrics units inviting, decorative and bright is one way to make children feel more at ease.

Thanks to BMW Financial Services NA, LLC, a large colorful painting now hangs on the wall in Spartanburg Medical Center’s pediatrics unit.  The 12-bed pediatrics unit at Spartanburg Medical Center, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s flagship hospital, is staffed with 22 clinical staff members and serves more than 200 patients a month.

“It means a lot to receive art work like this,” said Devonne Gerstenacker, MSN, RN, CPN, CPS and nurse manager of pediatrics. “Having a bright environment makes our patients feel happier and that’s a big part of healing.”

“The paintings brighten up the area,” said patient care associate Martha Scott, RN. “We need that for our patients, many of whom are in the same room and surroundings for extended periods of time undergoing tough treatments.”

This is one of many community support programs BMW Financial Services engages in all over the country.  The company culture is rooted in sustainability, responsibility and giving back to local communities. During its annual “Driving Force” event, BMW Financial Services executives and dealers, together participate in community outreach.

“Corporate Social Responsibility is in our DNA, said, Ed Robinson, CEO, BMW Financial Services. “We work closely with our dealers and invite them to join our efforts in local communities. Our teams have renovated a school in Punta Mita, Mexico, contributed to a foundation for sea turtle rescue and research in Boca Raton, Florida, donated to a number of Seeing Eye Dog programs, and now collaborated on a colorful six-panel mural-like painting to brighten the hospital and treatment facilities. It’s a wonderful part of our culture.”

BMW FS collaborated on the project with the Atlanta-based Foundation for Hospital Art, which provides art kits and other support for volunteers to create paintings. The Foundation for Hospital Art connected BMW Financial Services with Spartanburg Regional Foundation’s Healing Arts Program. Spartanburg County, in South Carolina, is home to the BMW Manufacturing Co., the BMW Performance Center and the BMW Zentrum Museum.
